A Little Spring Cleaning For Your Skin After a Dry Winter
I know spring is coming when I start hearing some of these phrases in my appointments while the numbing cream is kicking in:
“Yeah, and my skin just looks so dry and dull no matter what I do.” “Ugh! I can’t stand how flaky my skin is.” “I don’t even know what the problem is but the TEXTURE, the TIGHTNESS - I’m missing the GLOW in my skin.”
And the culprit is usually Miss Winter with her cold winds, dry air, and months of quietly sucking the life out of our skin.
Between cold air, indoor heating, travel, stress, and the occasional night where skincare just didn’t happen (guilty), a lot of skin comes out of winter feeling a little tired. So when people start spring cleaning their homes, it’s actually a really good time to do the same thing with your skincare.
Now I’m not saying you necessarily need to go on a ‘throw everything in the trash and startover’ spree, but definitely by resetting a few things.
First: take a look at how many products you’re actually using
Over the winter months, routines have a way of growing - hello doomscrolling skincare routines for hours while you’re all cozied up inside and suddenly convinced you need every trending product. Someone adds something for dryness, then something for texture, then a serum they saw recommended online, and suddenly there are eight different products involved.
The truth is that most healthy routines don’t need that much.
A cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin, a moisturizer that supports your barrier, daily sunscreen, and maybe one or two targeted treatments is usually plenty. If your routine has gotten complicated, spring is a good time to simplify and give your skin a chance to settle down again. (Let this be your reminder that I have a variety of AMAZING skincare systems I recommend at Chrysalis - I’ve basically done all the heavy lifting for you to set you up with a simple, stick-to-it-able skincare routine)
Second: check in on exfoliation
One of the reasons skin can look dull this time of year is simply because dead skin cells have built up over the winter.
This doesn’t mean you need to attack your face with strong acids every night, but gentle exfoliation - whether that’s through skincare or treatments like microneedling - can help your skin start turning over more efficiently again.
Microneedling and PRP are two of my favorite treatments for this time of year because they stimulate collagen and help improve texture without dramatically changing your face. They seriously just help your skin function better overall.
Third: think about maintenance, not transformation
Spring is also when people start thinking about Botox again, especially if they have weddings, travel, or events coming up.
Most of the time we’re not doing anything dramatic. It’s usually small treatments that soften expression lines or maintain results that are already there. The goal is always that you still look like yourself - just well rested, refreshed, and like your skin has woken up from its winter hibernation.
And finally: PLEASE don’t forget sunscreen
I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, and I’ll say it again - even if the sun isn’t out, your skin needs sunscreen. But especially when the sun starts coming back out, this becomes even more important. If you’re investing in your skin, whether that’s through skincare or treatments, protecting it from UV damage is what keeps those results looking good long term.
Spring doesn’t have to mean completely overhauling your skin. Most of the time it’s just about simplifying your routine, refreshing your skin after the winter months, and making small adjustments that help it return to its natural rhythm.
Just like everything else in nature, our skin moves through seasons too. Winter asks a lot from it, and spring is usually when it’s ready to wake back up again.
If your skin has been feeling like it could use a little reset, we can always take a look together and create a plan that supports your skin where it’s at right now!
